The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Other Associated Institutions (NASU) has threatened to resume its suspended strike over the Federal Government’s failure to pay four months of withheld salaries.
NASU’s General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi, made this statement during the union’s ongoing National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja. Although he did not specify when the strike would begin, it is expected that the NEC will decide soon.
Adeyemi expressed frustration with the government’s inaction, stating, “We are going to resume the suspended strike.” He also criticized the Finance Ministry for not complying with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to pay two months of the withheld salaries. Adeyemi accused the Finance Minister of disregarding the president’s order and prioritizing other matters.
The suspended strike relates to salaries withheld under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2022, following a prolonged strike over unresolved disputes. Despite Tinubu’s directive in October 2023 to release partial payments, NASU claims the funds have yet to be disbursed, leaving its members increasingly impatient.
