Kogi Governor Ahmed Ododo Urges Local Government Officials to Uphold Autonomy, Ethics, and Accountability

Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Ododo, has called on Directors of Local Government (DLGs) and Treasurers to uphold the principles of local government autonomy and adhere strictly to professional ethics in the execution of their duties.

Ododo made this statement during an interactive session held on Sunday with the forum of DLGs and Treasurers at the Government House in Lokoja. He emphasized the critical role local government officials play as the government’s representatives at the grassroots level. According to the governor, their effectiveness as top civil servants will not only enhance the relationship between the government and the people but will also promote greater development within local government administration.

The governor commended the dedication and productivity demonstrated by the DLGs and Treasurers, highlighting the vital role they play in maintaining accurate records and upholding professional standards. This, he stressed, is especially important for accountants in the public sector, as it ensures transparency and accountability in governance. Ododo also encouraged unity among the officials, urging them to support the State Accountant General, Habiba Onumoko, in order to ensure the successful delivery of the dividends of democracy to the grassroots.

In his remarks, Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Aliyu Umar, praised Governor Ododo’s leadership for its transparency and accountability. He pledged the legislature’s continued support for the governor’s initiatives aimed at bringing governance closer to the people, particularly at the grassroots level.

During her welcome address, the State Accountant General, Habiba Onumoko, lauded Ododo’s contributions to grassroots development, youth and women empowerment, and the creation of employment opportunities, describing him as a leader of great impact and humility. She noted that his policies and actions have significantly boosted opportunities for many within the state, including appointments to government positions.

Additionally, the Chairman of the forum of DLGs in Kogi State, Aliyu Musa, expressed gratitude to the governor for his approval of the 72,500 Naira minimum wage for workers, as well as other initiatives that have improved the welfare of civil servants in the state. He also praised Onumoko for her guidance and professionalism in carrying out her responsibilities.
