The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed claims of BVAS machine smuggling in Edo State, calling the allegations baseless, unsubstantiated, and without merit. The allegations were made by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in a petition to INEC on October 10, accusing members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of smuggling BVAS machines and voter registers into the INEC office in Benin.
In a statement issued in Benin on Friday, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Edo State, Dr. Anugbum Onuoha, confirmed that the commission had thoroughly investigated the matter and found no evidence to support the claims. He emphasized that there had been no compromise or unlawful access to the BVAS machines or voter registers by any political or external group at any time.
Onuoha reassured the public that INEC remains committed to upholding the integrity of the electoral process. He also noted that in line with a recent court order, the commission is fully prepared to facilitate the inspection of election materials and will ensure transparency in the handling of the BVAS machines. INEC, he added, will continue to strictly adhere to the rule of law in its operations.
The REC called on all political parties to cooperate during the inspection process and focus on fostering democratic values. He urged political actors to refrain from actions that could undermine public trust in the electoral system, encouraging them instead to support efforts aimed at strengthening democracy.
Dr. Onuoha reaffirmed that INEC is dedicated to maintaining neutrality, ensuring excellence in electoral administration, and delivering credible results in all elections. He stressed that the commission’s primary goal is to safeguard the democratic process and protect the public’s confidence in the integrity of elections.
