The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State has secured a decisive victory in the recent local government elections, winning 30 out of 31 chairmanship seats, while the All Progressives Congress (APC) managed to win just one seat. This was detailed in a list released on Sunday and signed by the Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC), AniediAbasi Ikoiwak.
In response to the election results, Governor Umo Eno announced plans to swear in the newly elected chairmen on Monday, October 7, 2024. This follows AKISIEC’s decision to issue certificates of return to all the winning chairmen on Sunday, formalizing their election victories.
Speaking at the All Nations Christian Ministry in Eket, Governor Eno emphasized the urgency of swearing in the chairmen to enable them to begin their roles in advancing local governance. He stressed the importance of having democratically-elected officials in place to drive the development of the state’s local government areas, noting that this move is crucial for the rapid progress of grassroots communities across Akwa Ibom.
