The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has issued a 15-day ultimatum to the Kano State Government, demanding that their members’ grievances be addressed or face the risk of a statewide strike. The ultimatum follows a State Administrative Council meeting, where it was determined that the government has repeatedly failed to respond to a series of communications regarding the welfare and demands of nurses and midwives in the state.
In a formal notice signed by the association’s acting State Secretary and Public Relations Officer, Ahmad Sharada, and directed to the Kano State Head of Civil Service, the NANNM warned that if their demands are not met by the expiration of the notice, all nurses and midwives in Kano will withdraw their services from clinical facilities and training institutions. The strike is set to commence after the notice period, which runs from Wednesday, October 2, to Wednesday, October 16, 2024.
Among the key demands listed by the association are the payment of a revised hazard allowance for nurses, the harmonization of the Scheme of Service for nursing professionals, and the implementation of a 259% upward review of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) for nurses. These demands, according to the association, are long overdue and essential for improving the working conditions and remuneration of nursing staff in Kano State.
If the state government fails to act within the 15-day window, the association warns that the strike will disrupt healthcare services across the state, potentially affecting both clinical care and the operations of training institutions.
