The All Progressives Congress (APC) has been officially declared the winner of the local government elections held in Kwara State on Saturday. This announcement was made public through a statement issued by the chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission, Mohammed Baba-Okanla, on Sunday morning. The statement confirmed that the APC secured victory in both chairmanship and councillorship positions across all 16 local government councils and 193 wards in the state.
According to Baba-Okanla, five political parties participated in the elections, including the APC, Allied Peoples Movement (APM), People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and the Accord Party. The electoral process was carried out across the entire state, involving all local governments and wards. Baba-Okanla highlighted that, after thoroughly collating and verifying the results submitted by electoral and returning officers, the APC emerged as the clear winner in every contested position.
The commission chairman also praised the peaceful conduct of the elections, noting that there were no major incidents of violence or disruptions. He expressed gratitude to the people of Kwara State for their active participation in the democratic process and acknowledged the professionalism of the security agencies in ensuring that law and order were maintained throughout the voting period.
The detailed results from the various local government areas showed that the APC consistently outperformed its rivals. For instance, in Ifelodun Local Government, the APC garnered 22,524 votes, while the PDP secured 2,727, and the APM received 482. Similarly, in Oyun Local Government, the APC won with 12,159 votes, while the PDP had 356, and the APM got 386.
Other local governments followed a similar trend, with the APC winning in Oke Ero, Isin, Edu, and several others. In Ilorin West, the APC recorded a significant margin of victory, collecting 50,128 votes, while the PDP managed 4,202, and the APM received 1,882. The results demonstrated APC’s dominance across the state, as the party claimed all chairmanship and councillorship seats.
In closing, Baba-Okanla thanked the various political parties for their commitment to maintaining peace during the election and once again extended his appreciation to the voters and security personnel for their roles in ensuring a smooth electoral process.
