The Adamawa State government has received 200,000 doses of cholera vaccine from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in response to the recent outbreak of the disease in four Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state. This was revealed by the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Felix Tangwani, during a press briefing held on Sunday in Yola, the state’s capital.
Tangwani explained that more doses of the vaccine are expected to arrive soon, and the current supply will be distributed to residents, with priority given to those in the affected LGAs—Yola-North, Yola-South, Fufore, and Girei. The aim is to boost the immunity of the population against the cholera outbreak, which has caused growing concern in the state.
The commissioner further provided an update on the testing of samples taken from suspected cholera cases. Of the 50 samples sent to the National Reference Laboratory in Abuja, 30 returned positive for cholera, six were negative, while two are still being processed and 12 are pending results.
Tangwani assured the public that the state government is taking all necessary measures to control the spread of the disease. He added that a rapid response team from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is on its way to assist the state’s technical team in managing the outbreak.
He urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with health workers who will be conducting awareness campaigns in the affected areas. Tangwani also emphasized the importance of personal hygiene, advising people to ensure that their drinking water is from safe and clean sources to prevent further spread of the disease.
