The Federal Government on Wednesday reassured residents of Mpape and nearby suburbs affected by recent earth tremors not to be alarmed, emphasizing that moderate seismic activity does not signal the onset of earthquakes.
This reassurance came from Dr. Matthew Adepoju, Director-General of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), during a press conference in Abuja.
Earlier this week, tremors were recorded across Mpape, Maitama, and other areas, causing widespread concern. Reports indicated that between six and eight seismic movements had been detected. However, Adepoju stressed that residents should remain calm as the situation is being closely managed and is under control.
He also revealed that quarry workers and heavy machinery operators in the affected areas have been instructed to halt their activities temporarily as a precautionary measure.
“We want to assure the people of Mpape and the larger Abuja area that these tremors are not indicative of an impending earthquake. There is no need to panic,” Adepoju said, adding that continuous monitoring will be in place, with updates provided as necessary.
