Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has generously donated N100 million to support the victims of the devastating flood that recently struck Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. The donation was made public through a statement released by his media adviser, Paul Ibe, on Sunday.
During his visit to Maiduguri, Abubakar, who was the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, also paid a courtesy visit to the state governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, at the Government House. It was during this visit that the donation to the flood relief fund was officially announced, underscoring his commitment to providing immediate aid to those affected.
According to reports from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), more than 23,000 households have been impacted by the severe flooding, which was triggered by the rupture of the Alau Dam on the Ngadda River, located 20 kilometers south of Maiduguri. Heavy rainfall led to the dam’s overflow, causing what is now being described as the most significant flood the town has experienced in 30 years. Both the United Nations Human Rights Refugee Council and local residents of Maiduguri’s Metropolitan Council have reported widespread damage, with thousands of families displaced and in urgent need of assistance.
Abubakar’s contribution is expected to provide much-needed relief to the affected communities as recovery efforts continue.
