The Police Service Commission (PSC) has authorized the deployment of a new Commissioner of Police to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command. This was revealed in a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja by the PSC’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Mr. Ikechukwu Ani.

Ani explained that the posting is based on the recommendation of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun. CP Peter Opara has been appointed as the new Commissioner of Police for the FCT, succeeding CP Benneth Igwe, who has been promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) and reassigned to Zone 7, Abuja.

Peter Opara brings extensive experience to his new role, having previously served as the Commissioner of Police at the Force Secretary’s Office. Prior to that, he was the Deputy Commissioner of Administration and Finance at the Imo State Command. His career also includes a stint as the Personal Assistant to former PSC Chairman and ex-Inspector General of Police, Mike Okiro.

Additionally, Ani highlighted Opara’s educational background, noting that the newly appointed CP of Akwa Ibom Command holds a law degree from the University of Calabar and had previously served as a Liaison Officer at the PSC.

The PSC also announced that on Friday, it approved the appointments of four substantive Commissioners of Police for Abia, Lagos, Ebonyi, and Akwa Ibom State Commands, in line with efforts to strengthen police leadership across the country and enhance security operations in these regions.
