The Lagos State Government has announced a traffic diversion to facilitate emergency repairs on the Eko Bridge, which will be carried out by the Federal Ministry of Works. The diversion is set to begin on Monday, September 16, 2024, and will last for eight weeks.
The announcement was made in a statement by the State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, on Friday. According to the commissioner, the repairs would be conducted in four phases, during which the bridge would either be fully or partially closed, depending on the specific phase of the work.
To ease traffic congestion, Osiyemi outlined several alternative routes for motorists. Those heading to the island from Funsho Williams Avenue could use the service lane at Alaka to connect to Costain and access the Eko Bridge. Alternatively, motorists could go through Costain to connect to Apongbon via the Eko Bridge. Other options included connecting from Apongbon inward to Eko Bridge or linking Costain to Funsho Williams Avenue. Additionally, motorists could use Costain inward Alaka/Funsho Williams Avenue or take Apapa Road from Costain to Oyingbo, accessing Adekunle to connect to the Third Mainland Bridge.
For motorists heading toward Surulere, the commissioner advised using Costain to link Breweries inward Abebe Village to connect Eric Moore/Bode Thomas for their destinations.
He also assured the public that Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officers would be stationed at the construction zones and along the alternative routes to minimize travel disruptions and inconvenience.
