The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has announced that it is implementing several measures to address the impact of severe flooding at its Medium Security Custodial Centre in Maiduguri, Borno State.
This was revealed in a statement on Tuesday by the NCoS spokesperson, Umar Abubakar, who detailed how the flooding, triggered by the overflow and collapse of the Alau Dam in Konduga Local Government Area, has caused significant disruptions to the custodial facility and posed serious risks to its operations.
In response to the crisis, the NCoS has activated an emergency response plan aimed at safeguarding both inmates and staff. The plan includes the evacuation of inmates to more secure locations, close collaboration with security and emergency services for additional support, and ensuring the continuity of essential services within the affected areas.
Abubakar emphasized that NCoS personnel are working around the clock to manage the situation, ensuring the safe and orderly relocation of inmates to prevent any security breaches.
The NCoS also expressed gratitude to the Presidency, acknowledging the crucial role played by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who recently visited Maiduguri to assess the extent of the damage and coordinate relief efforts.
The service assured the public that it will provide continuous updates on the situation and remains fully committed to maintaining security, order, and safety during this challenging period.
Maiduguri, the state capital, has been severely affected by the floods following the collapse of the Alau Dam, leaving large parts of the city submerged. Local residents have compared the disaster to the devastating floods of 1994, with many noting that this current event has caused even greater damage.
