Ademola Lookman scored twice and Victor Osimhen added another as Nigeria cruised to a 3-0 victory over Benin in their opening 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. This win avenged their 2-1 loss to Benin in a World Cup qualifier last June.

Under coach Augustine Eguavoen, the Super Eagles lined up in a 3-4-3 formation, taking inspiration from Jose Peseiro’s tactics. William Troost-Ekong returned to defense alongside Calvin Bassey and Semi Ajayi, with Ola Aina and Bruno Onyemaechi in the wingback positions. Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi controlled the midfield, while Victor Boniface led the attack, supported by Lookman and Samuel Chukwueze.

Despite a cautious start and a resilient Benin side managed by Gernot Rohr, Nigeria struggled to create clear chances early on. However, Lookman broke the deadlock just before halftime, showcasing his dribbling skills to score a low shot.

In the second half, Benin pushed for an equalizer, but goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali made key saves to keep Nigeria ahead. Eguavoen introduced Victor Osimhen, who quickly made an impact by scoring Nigeria’s second goal off a cross from Ndidi. It was Osimhen’s 22nd goal for Nigeria, moving him up the national scoring charts.

Lookman sealed the win with his second goal in the 83rd minute, capping off a dominant performance for the Super Eagles.
