The Federal Government has announced plans to set up Blood Collection Centres in all 774 local government areas, including the Federal Capital Territory, to ensure a sufficient supply of blood during medical emergencies and transfusions. This was revealed in a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday by Abdullahi Haruna, Head of Media and Publicity for the National Blood Service Agency (NBSA).

According to the statement, NBSA Director-General Prof. Saleh Yuguda reiterated the government’s dedication to addressing the country’s blood shortages, noting that the initiative would be life-saving. He emphasized the agency’s efforts to meet the demand for blood and described the plan as a major step forward.

The NBSA has also partnered with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to set up a robust blood bank at the Corps’ medical facility. This collaboration is aimed at alleviating blood shortages during emergencies and offering support to other security agencies.

To launch the initiative, strategic blood collection facilities will first be established in easily accessible locations within the Federal Capital Territory. This move is expected to boost blood donation rates and ensure a consistent supply of blood for medical use.

The statement highlighted that the creation of these centers reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare services nationwide, with improved access to blood transfusions and better health outcomes anticipated as the project progresses.

NSCDC Deputy Commandant Emeka Okeke also noted that the initiative would play a crucial role in addressing blood shortages and saving lives.
