Super Eagles Begin 2025 AFCON Qualifier Preparations as Players Arrive in Uyo

Seven players arrived at the Super Eagles camp in Uyo at 10 a.m. on Monday as preparations begin for Nigeria’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches.

Among the players who have checked in are William Troost-Ekong, Ola Aina, Semi Ajayi, Ademola Lookman, Olisa Ndah, Taiwo Awoniyi, and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.

Nigeria is scheduled to face Benin Republic in their first Group D match on Saturday, September 7, 2024, with kickoff set for 5 p.m. at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.

This was confirmed through a video posted on the Super Eagles’ official X account on Monday.

The 2025 AFCON qualifiers, overseen by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), will determine which teams advance to the tournament in Morocco, the 35th edition of Africa’s premier men’s football competition.

The qualification process, which began with preliminary matches from March 21 to 26, will wrap up with group stage games in September, October, and November 2024.

A total of 24 teams, including automatically-qualified hosts Morocco, will earn spots in the final tournament.

According to the Nigeria Football Federation, all Super Eagles players were expected to report to the Uyo camp on Monday.

Following their second-place finish at the 2024 AFCON in Ivory Coast earlier this year, Nigeria now begins its quest for another major tournament, which will be held in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.

Nigeria’s opening qualifier against Benin Republic is set for Saturday, September 7, followed by a match against Rwanda in Kigali three days later.
