Supreme Court Upholds Re-election of Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma

The Supreme Court has confirmed the re-election of Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, solidifying his victory in the polls.

On Friday, August 23, a five-judge panel dismissed the Labour Party’s appeal, ruling it lacked merit.

Justice Mohammed Baba Idris, delivering the main judgment, ruled against the appellants on all three issues, stating that the Labour Party and its candidate, Athan Achonu, failed to substantiate their allegations.

Consequently, Justice Idris upheld the earlier decision of the Court of Appeal, which had already dismissed the Labour Party’s petition.

The Supreme Court is also reviewing a separate appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Samuel Anyawu.

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), out of 2,419,922 registered voters in the state, 2,318,919 collected Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), with 701,338 valid votes recorded in the election.

INEC had declared Governor Hope Uzodimma of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the November 11, 2023, governorship election in Imo State. The APC candidate secured 540,308 votes, defeating his closest challengers, PDP’s Anyanwu, who received 71,503 votes, and LP’s Achonu, who garnered 64,081 votes.
