Sepp van den Berg has officially departed Liverpool, completing his transfer to Brentford after five years on Merseyside.
The Dutch defender, who was active during Liverpool’s pre-season, has now joined Brentford in a deal valued at an initial £20 million, with an additional £5 million in potential add-ons.
Although Bayer Leverkusen had also reached an agreement with Liverpool, Van den Berg opted to remain in England, where he is expected to receive ample playing time under Brentford manager Thomas Frank, known for promoting young talent to the first team.
Van den Berg, 22, underwent a successful medical on Thursday and has signed a five-year contract with Brentford, where he is anticipated to earn a significant salary increase from his current wages, estimated at £10,000 or less per week.
The centre-back, who made just four appearances for Liverpool, originally joined the Reds in 2019 for £4.4 million. His transfer to Brentford could net Liverpool close to £20 million in profit.
Van den Berg is not the only young Liverpool player to join Brentford this summer; he follows Fabio Carvalho, who made his debut for the club in their 2-1 win over Crystal Palace on the opening day of the season. Carvalho’s transfer included an initial £22.5 million fee with £5 million in add-ons, along with a 17.5 percent sell-on clause.
Van den Berg is expected to be available for selection against Liverpool on Sunday.
