On Wednesday, Moscow experienced one of its largest drone assaults, with Russia’s defense ministry reporting the interception of 11 drones over the capital and 34 others in surrounding areas. This unprecedented attack, described by Mayor Sergei Sobyanin as a major drone assault, marks a significant escalation in Ukraine’s strategy, shifting the conflict beyond eastern Ukraine.
Following recent Ukrainian advances in the Kursk region, capturing 450 square kilometers, the drone strikes are part of a broader effort to disrupt Russian logistics and weaken Moscow’s military. Despite the severity of the attacks, the Kremlin has downplayed the situation, with limited media coverage and a restrained public response from President Vladimir Putin.
In response, Russia has increased its military presence and issued warnings to residents in affected regions, emphasizing the threat of Ukrainian intelligence gathering.
