Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku, Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress Political Commission, appealed to Nigerians for patience with Federal and State Governments regarding delays in implementing the new minimum wage. This statement was made on Monday.
President Bola Tinubu approved the new minimum wage of N70,000 on July 29, following discussions with Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress leaders.
Currently, only seven states—Kano, Kwara, Ogun, Borno, Jigawa, Ondo, and Abia—have established committees to implement the wage increase. Other states, including Plateau, Kebbi, Sokoto, and many more, have not yet set up their implementation panels.
While Lagos and Edo have reportedly begun paying the new wage, Adamawa has now joined the list of states committed to the increase.
Ndubuaku highlighted that delays might occur due to the complexity of the wage adjustment process but expressed hope that implementation could be completed by the end of August. He emphasized that signing the wage law is just one step in a detailed process that includes adjusting salary scales from entry-level to the highest levels.
