President Bola Tinubu’s administration has announced plans to offer electricity subsidies to universities and healthcare facilities, including those served by Band A feeders.

Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, revealed this initiative during a radio interview in Ibadan on August 17. The decision follows concerns from educational and public health institutions about the impact of electricity subsidy removal on their operations. Universities such as UNILAG and the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, as well as other institutions like the Federal University of Technology, Akure, and the University of Benin, have reported substantial increases in their electricity costs.

Adelabu recognized the financial difficulties faced by these institutions, referring to them as key development and social entities. He noted that the subsidy will be available only to institutions with proper metering and will not extend to private businesses within these institutions. The government is currently gathering data to ensure accurate distribution, with institutions required to cover any remaining balance after the subsidy is applied.
