The Nigerian government is seeking a $500 million loan from the World Bank to fund its newly approved Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (HSRII). This loan, part of the ‘Nigeria: Primary Healthcare Provision Strengthening Program,’ aims to tackle significant health challenges in the country.

The World Bank is expected to approve the loan by September 26, 2024. According to an August 16, 2024, Program Information Document, the funding will enhance essential health services and strengthen Nigeria’s health system. Launched in December 2023, HSRII focuses on improving health outcomes and reducing preventable deaths through investments in primary healthcare.

The World Bank’s loan will be the main component of a $570 million financing package for the initiative, with an additional $70 million anticipated from trust funds. The Federal Ministry of Health will manage the program’s implementation.
