Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced plans to confer citizenship on foreign volunteers serving in Ukraine’s Defense Forces and their families. Revealed on August 15 via Telegram, this move aims to recognize the contributions of these defenders of Ukraine’s sovereignty.
The initiative targets members of the Ukrainian International Legion—foreign nationals fighting for Ukraine without Ukrainian citizenship—along with their families. Zelenskyy’s announcement is part of a broader legislative effort, which includes ensuring full compensation and benefits for soldiers on Russian soil, managing captured weapons, and addressing the status of Ukrainians who fled to Russia after the February 2022 invasion.
The President has called for the Ukrainian parliament to meet urgently to address these matters and strengthen the nation’s legal framework this August.
