On Thursday, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol outlined his vision for unification with North Korea, proposing the formation of a working group for dialogue despite ongoing tensions. In his Independence Day address, marking the end of Japan’s colonial rule in 1945, Yoon emphasized that “complete liberation remains an unfinished task.”

Yoon’s unification strategy focuses on fostering change in North Korea by improving human rights and increasing access to external information. He also urged for building international support among allies for unification and suggested creating an “Inter-Korean Working Group” to facilitate discussions with the North. This initiative comes at a time when the prospects for unification seem particularly bleak.
