President Bola Tinubu signed into law a bill on Tuesday that authorizes a 300% salary increase for judicial officers at both federal and state levels. The legislation, titled “Judicial Office Holders’ Salaries and Allowances,” was passed by the Senate in June 2024 and will see the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) earning ₦64 million annually.
In a statement released by Basheer Lado, Special Adviser to the President on Senate Matters, Tinubu’s action was described as a demonstration of his “unwavering commitment” to the welfare of Nigeria’s judiciary. Lado highlighted that the Act outlines the salaries, allowances, and other benefits for judicial officers across the country.
Under the new law, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, will receive an annual salary of ₦64 million. The President of the Court of Appeal will earn ₦62.4 million, while each Supreme Court Justice will be compensated with ₦61.4 million. Additionally, the heads of various courts, including the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, the Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, and the President of the National Industrial Court, will all receive a uniform annual salary of ₦7.9 million.
