The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) has announced that local government elections will take place on September 28, 2024, after a decade-long hiatus.

This decision follows two years of Professor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration and increasing pressure from Civil Society Organizations and other key stakeholders.

In a statement issued on Monday, ANSIEC Chairman Genevieve C. Osakwe notified registered political parties and the public about the upcoming elections. The statement also detailed the election timetable and schedule of activities, available at the ANSIEC headquarters in Awka starting August 14, 2024.

This announcement comes shortly after Governor Soludo inaugurated the ANSIEC members last week, emphasizing the importance of a transparent and credible election. The local government election was a major focus at the state’s Executive Council meeting on Monday.

The last local government elections in Anambra State were held in 2013 under former Governor Peter Obi. Since then, local governance has been managed by caretaker committees, with no elections conducted during Willie Obiano’s eight-year tenure.
