The Federal Government has announced the closure of the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos to large trucks as structural repairs continue. The decision was disclosed on the Ministry of Works’ website following a meeting between Minister David Umahi and representatives from Julius Berger, the contractor responsible for repairs on the Third Mainland, Iddo, and Carter Bridges.

Minister Umahi commended Julius Berger for their work on the under-deck repairs, confirming that 30% of the payment has already been made, with the remaining payments to be processed within seven days, pending available funds.

The Minister emphasized the urgency of the repairs, noting that 53 years of neglect have left the bridges in a severely deteriorated condition, making the closure to large trucks necessary for safety reasons. These actions are part of the federal government’s broader efforts to ensure commuter safety and the long-term stability of these vital infrastructure links.
