Ahead of the nationwide protest set to begin, the Commissioner of Police for Enugu State, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, has issued a strong warning against any acts of violence or disruptions to public peace.
The warning, issued in a statement by Police Public Relations Officer DSP Daniel Ndukwe on Monday, is aimed at safeguarding lives, property, and critical national assets.
CP Uzuegbu cited intelligence reports indicating that criminal elements plan to infiltrate and hijack the protest, potentially causing harm to law-abiding citizens and damaging property in the state.
He noted that these individuals, similar to those involved in the violent EndSARS protests, aim to attack people, destroy public and private property, and engage in looting. The Commissioner assured that the police and other security forces are prepared to address these threats decisively.
While acknowledging the right of citizens to peacefully assemble and express their grievances, CP Uzuegbu stressed that allowing the protest to be taken over by violence is unacceptable, particularly given the current challenging circumstances.
He urged those planning the protest in Enugu State to reconsider their plans in light of the intelligence reports and to explore alternative, peaceful means of expression. If the protest proceeds, it must comply with existing laws, including the Public Order Act, which requires detailed applications specifying leaders, date, time, location, and duration of the event, subject to thorough review and approval.
The Commissioner also called on residents of Enugu State to remain law-abiding and vigilant, and to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station, especially if individuals attempt to use the protest as a cover for criminal behavior.
