Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has criticized the Federal Government for its alleged failure to implement effective measures to support Nigerians during the current economic hardship.
He invited the Federal Government to learn from his administration’s strategies for ensuring relief packages reach those in need.
Governor Obaseki made these remarks while launching the second phase of the Christian Feeding Programme (CFP), which will distribute 56,250 bags of 10kg rice across the state’s three senatorial districts to alleviate suffering. The distribution began in Edo South Senatorial District, where Obaseki inspected the warehouse at the Diocese of Benin Anglican Communion in Benin City.
At the warehouse, CAN Chairman Apostle Irekpono Omoike provided a distribution breakdown: Edo South will receive 21,875 bags, Edo Central will get 15,625 bags, and Edo North will receive 18,750 bags. This second phase follows the first phase, which took place about three months ago and aimed to reduce hardship.
The program is a collaborative effort between the Edo government, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), and other Christian bodies in the state. Obaseki thanked the Christian leaders for their dedication, noting that the CFP has reached over 50,000 families.
“If resources are managed properly in this country, they can significantly benefit the people. Despite the challenges, the current leadership is not effectively supporting Nigerians. This program demonstrates transparency and a commitment to serving the people, something the Federal Government could learn from Edo State,” Obaseki said.
“The CFP has successfully reached around 50,000 families with food. It’s about transparency, honesty, and a genuine desire to serve the people, unlike the Federal Government’s broader claims. Global challenges exist, but governments need to be transparent for people to trust and collaborate with them.” he reiterated.
Regarding the planned 10-day nationwide protest starting on August 1, 2024, Obaseki urged Edo residents to remain peaceful and avoid actions that could worsen the situation. “We urge people not to take actions that will exacerbate our current issues. In the coming days, we will engage with our citizens to find solutions without creating more problems,” he said.
“The CFP will be conducted in three phases. We have completed the first phase, and this second phase aims to correct any mistakes and build trust. It also consolidates the achievements of the first phase,” Obaseki stated.
