Inspector-General of Police Olukayode Egbetokun has assured that the Nigeria Police will handle the planned August 1 protest by Nigerians “in the most professional manner.”

Egbetokun provided this assurance during a meeting in Abuja with Strategic Police Managers, including officers of the rank of Commissioner of Police and above.

He explained that the meeting was convened to exchange and analyze intelligence from various Police Commands to ensure national security.

“We are prepared and committed to managing the protest professionally,” he said.

The IG emphasized that the police are dedicated to protecting those participating in peaceful protests.

“If the protest remains peaceful, we will provide protection to the protesters. However, we have a responsibility to protect lives and property, and we will not allow any destruction or violence under the guise of protest.”

He noted that while maintaining order during a peaceful protest is manageable, it becomes problematic if the protest turns violent.

“Violent protests are unacceptable in any civilized society. While the right to protest is fundamental, it must be peaceful. Violent protests are criminal,” he added.

The IG also called on Nigerian youths to reject any calls for violent actions and to engage in peaceful demonstrations.
