Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has announced a decrease in crime rates across Nigeria, backed by official records.
IGP Egbetokun made this statement to State House correspondents following a security meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday.
The Police Chief attributed the decline to effective collaboration and strategies among security agencies, pledging continued efforts to maintain this positive trend.
He also mentioned that President Tinubu urged security agencies to enhance their cooperation to better secure the nation.
“It was a routine security meeting with Mr. President where we provided security briefs. This is a regular occurrence. Mr. President is pleased with our progress and has encouraged us to continue improving our synergy,” Egbetokun said.
“Records confirm a decline in crime rates across the country. We are committed to sustaining this reduction,” he added.
Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, also addressed the media after the meeting, assuring Nigerians of the military’s efforts to restore full oil production in the Niger Delta to 2.1 million barrels per day. He warned those involved in infrastructure damage and crude oil theft that they would be pursued by the military.
General Musa stressed the importance of collective effort and urged stakeholders, including states and communities, to work together to restore oil production. He acknowledged the challenges faced by communities and assured them that President Tinubu would address their concerns to ensure uninterrupted oil production.
“Restoring full production is a top priority, targeting 2.1 million barrels per day. The President is aware of community grievances and is committed to addressing them,” General Musa stated.
“The criminals destroying our infrastructure and stealing crude oil should know their days are numbered. We need collective effort from all stakeholders to achieve this success,” he added.
Also present at the meeting were the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; Director-General of the Department of State Service, Yusuf Bichi; Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ahmed Rufa’i Abubakar; Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Immigration Service, Kemi Nanna Nandap, and others.
