On Wednesday, the Benue State Government imposed a 24-hour curfew in Ukum Local Government Area (LGA) due to serious security breaches.
Governor Hyacinth Alia, represented by Deputy Governor Sam Ode, announced the measure at a news briefing in Makurdi following a State Security Council meeting.
The curfew was deemed necessary in response to extensive destruction of government property and threats to lives in the area.
The governor expressed shock at the severe security situation, which had led to a breakdown of law and order, significant damage to government property, and threats to lives.
The curfew is intended to ensure the safety and protection of residents and their property. The governor urged all stakeholders and security agencies to strictly comply with the measure.
The 24-hour curfew will be in effect from 3 pm on Wednesday until 3 pm on Thursday, July 4. Following this, a nightly curfew from 6 pm to 6 am will be enforced starting Thursday, July 4, until further notice.
Earlier on Wednesday, a large number of youths took over Ayati-Sai Road in Ukum LGA, barricading it to protest alleged ongoing killings in the area. They also stormed the council Secretariat in Zaki Biam, causing damage to express their frustration over what they described as the government’s insensitivity to the killings.
“Thereafter, it will be from 6 pm to 6 am, beginning from Thursday, July 4, until further notice.
“This is the announcement from the Benue State Government’s seat of power,” the governor said.
A large number of youths on Wednesday took over Ayati -Sai Road in Ukum LGA and barricaded it to protest the alleged incessant killings in the area.
The state Police Command reported that all tactical teams in the area had arrived to bolster security.
