In a new development, the Acting Managing Director and CEO of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Abba Abubakar Aliyu, will speak to key energy professionals and government officials about the Agency’s initiatives to provide clean and reliable electricity across Nigeria.
Aliyu will present on the World Bank-approved Nigeria Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up (DARES) project.
Additionally, Dr. Emomotimi Agama, the Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), will discuss key policies and strategies to strengthen Nigeria’s economy and align with global green economy initiatives.
These sessions will be the highlights of the 3rd National Conference organized by Oriental News Nigeria, scheduled for July 25, 2024, at the Radisson Blu Hotel in GRA Ikeja, Lagos. This event will gather key policymakers, government and non-governmental organizations, and industry experts to focus on Nigeria’s Green Economy Initiative.
The theme for the 2024 Conference, “Green Economy, Sustainable Growth, and Infrastructure Transformation,” will explore strategies for sustaining Nigeria’s economic development. Sub-themes include Green Finance, Marketing and Supply Chain, Strategies and Policies for a Green Economy, Renewable Energy and Ecosystem for a Green Economy, and Digital Economy Entrepreneurship.
Dr. Agama, who has confirmed his attendance, expressed that opportunities within the green economy are linked to sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, ecotourism, and coastal development. Other stakeholders have noted that Nigeria’s focus on its natural resources could make it a leader in green economy development.
The conference will have two main segments. The first will include keynote speeches addressing the main theme and participant remarks. The second segment will feature a round-table discussion with professionals exploring the main theme and sub-themes in greater depth.
Global economies have faced prolonged slowdowns due to structural, global, and cyclical factors. Strategies aimed at combating recession and promoting rapid economic growth have often resulted in environmental degradation and global warming. Shifting to a green economy can enhance natural capital, protect the environment, and ensure social justice by providing tools for sustainable growth while minimizing environmental risks.
However, the transition to a green economy faces challenges such as inadequate policy frameworks, insufficient capital expenditure, and varying levels of development and resource endowments. Achieving green sustainable development requires new business models, strategic changes, resource innovation, responsible business practices, and green technologies.
The conference will bring together researchers, practitioners, and policymakers from across Nigeria for plenary sessions on the latest green economy practices and policies. It will also serve as a platform for academic peers to exchange information, share experiences, collaborate, and develop solutions to pressing business issues.
