Former House of Representatives member Dr. Farah Dagogo has once again urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to develop effective economic policies to alleviate the widespread suffering and hardship experienced by Nigerians.

In a statement released by his Special Assistant, Ibrahim Lawal, Dagogo described the current living standards as “grim,” warning that all indicators suggest “further pain for the citizenry.”

In his special Eid-ul-Adha (Sallah) message to Muslims across the nation, the former federal lawmaker expressed dismay that despite Nigeria’s abundant natural resources, people continue to suffer.

“Today, yesterday, and especially over the past year, the purchasing power of Nigerians has drastically reduced,” Dagogo stated. “Never has the country witnessed this level of hyperinflation, not even during the civil war. It is a grim reality.”

“The value of ₦40,000 in 2015 is now equivalent to over ₦500,000 in 2024. Comparing the costs of goods and services from then to now, we all arrive at a sad realization.”

Dagogo added that this severe economic downturn justifies the labor movement’s demand for a living wage.

“The harsh truth is that the value of money earned in 2024 is not much different from that of 2015, but purchasing power has significantly decreased. Anti-people and inhumane economic policies have put the populace in a dire state. Money that could buy over 10 bags of 50kg rice in 2015 can now only buy one, without any improvement in real income for the people.

“Something has to give. These sufferings and hardships must be addressed. Sadly, all signs point to further pain for the citizenry.”

Drawing from the central message of Eid-ul-Adha, which symbolizes sacrifice, Dagogo commended Nigerians for their resilience during these challenging times, particularly over the past year.

He urged the government to fulfill its promises and “walk the talk of renewing the citizenry’s hope.”
