The Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission has announced that the All Progressives Congress (APC) secured all 17 chairmanship seats and 178 councillor positions in the recently concluded local government elections.

After collating the results, the Commission’s Chairman, Dr. Mamman Mohammed, stated that although other political parties participated, none managed to win any positions.

The state electoral body will present certificates of return to the winners, with their swearing-in by Governor Mai Mala Buni to follow at a later date.

Governor Buni, while voting in his hometown, reiterated his support for local government autonomy, noting that his intention since taking office in 2019 was to grant autonomy to local government areas.

He acknowledged, however, that six out of the 17 local government areas struggle to pay salaries, thus justifying the need for a joint account system to support them.

The election was conducted peacefully, a contrast to previous years when voters faced threats from Boko Haram insurgents.
