The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has closed all seaports nationwide, following the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) directive.

This has significantly disrupted commercial activities within and around the ports. The NLC and Trade Union Congress (TUC) had warned of a strike over the proposed national minimum wage.

MWUN executives arrived at Apapa and Tin-Can Island Ports around 8 am to enforce the closure, complying with the NLC’s instructions after negotiations with the federal government reached a deadlock.

Public Relations Officer of MWUN, Jonhkenedy Ikechukwu, stated that the strike is comprehensive and will persist until the government meets labour’s demands. “All seaports are currently locked. The strike is total and will continue until the government accepts Labour’s demands,” he said.

Reports indicate that only Nigeria Customs Service officers were present at their offices, with banks and food vendors also absent.
