President Bola Tinubu has offered his heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Kano State in the wake of a devastating fire incident at a mosque in Larabar Abasawa, Gezawa Local Government Area.
In a statement relayed by his spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, on Tuesday, the President strongly condemned the arson attack that resulted in tragic loss of life. He instructed law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible face diligent prosecution.
President Tinubu expressed deep sympathy for the families of the victims and all those affected by the incident. He also extended prayers for the swift recovery of the injured.
The incident, which took place on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, involved Shafi’u Abubakar setting fire to the mosque and locking the doors, tragically trapping worshippers inside. Initial reports indicated that 17 individuals lost their lives, while others sustained severe burns and are currently undergoing treatment at Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital in Kano.
Shafiu, upon being apprehended by the police, admitted to targeting the mosque as an act of retribution against certain family members who were present during the prayer session. He alleged that they had wronged him in a dispute over inheritance.
