The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has advised drivers against transporting petrol in jerrycans while traveling to prevent potential fires.

During an event commemorating the West African Road Safety Organisation (WARSO) day in Kogi State, Mr. Samuel Oyedeji, FRSC Sector Commander, stressed the dangers of carrying fuel in jerrycans during transit, pointing to recent fatalities in the state caused by road accidents.

Oyedeji urged both passengers and drivers to refrain from this practice, particularly considering the current fuel scarcity, to ensure safe arrival at their destinations.

The event, marking WARSO’s 16th anniversary, aimed to facilitate the exchange of information and experiences among member states, raise awareness about the consequences of road accidents, and promote the establishment of road safety organizations in West Africa.

The commander outlined the command’s efforts to enhance the transportation system in Kogi, including engaging with stakeholders and rigorously enforcing speed limit devices on commercial vehicles.

He identified speeding, overloading, and reckless driving as leading causes of road accidents in the state, urging the public to demonstrate good conduct, cooperate with, and support the FRSC to enhance road safety.

Oyedeji emphasized that if motorists adhere to safe driving practices, road accidents could significantly decrease, if not be eradicated altogether, ensuring the safety of lives and property. To achieve this, the FRSC conducts awareness campaigns in various communities, including places of worship and motor parks, to promote road safety.

Additionally, in an effort to reduce road fatalities and injuries by 5%, the command recently conducted a public enlightenment campaign at the Lokoja Mega Terminal (LMT) park.
