A reliable insider within UEFA’s executive committee has revealed that nations gearing up for Euro 2024 in Germany, slated for June and July, will enjoy greater flexibility in assembling their squads.
This is according to the AFP, who revealed this on Friday. The size of these squads will range from 23 to 26 players, offering teams more options for their lineup strategies.
This marks a departure from the format seen in the previous European Championship in 2021. In that edition, teams had 26-player squads, but three players were sidelined, unable to participate fully. In contrast, all squad members for Euro 2024 will be eligible to appear on the teamsheet, a move aimed at maximizing team resources and readiness.
The decision to expand squad sizes was driven by the challenges posed by the pandemic, recognizing the potential disruptions caused by COVID-19 infections among squad members. This approach aligns with FIFA’s allowance for expanded squads at the 2022 World Cup, held during the European club season, where many leading players ply their trade.
Nevertheless, it remains uncertain whether all national team coaches will opt to utilize the maximum number of players available. Notably, French national team manager Didier Deschamps recently shared his reservations.
He highlighted statistical trends indicating that a significant portion of players in tournament squads rarely see significant playing time. Deschamps emphasized the importance of practical squad selection, reflecting a strategic approach rather than simply aiming to fill roster spots.
The deadline for final squad submissions for Euro 2024 is set for June 7, providing teams with ample time to finalize their selections ahead of the tournament kickoff.
