Mexican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, famously known as El Chapo, has accused authorities of obstructing his ability to make phone calls or receive visitors while he serves his life sentence in a maximum-security prison in the United States.
El Chapo conveyed his frustration to District Court Judge Brian Cogan in the Eastern District of New York, highlighting his distress over being unable to communicate with his twin daughters since his sentencing.
In a written plea, El Chapo stated, “The facility has abruptly halted my communication with my daughters, and for the past seven months, I have been deprived of speaking with them. Despite my inquiries about resuming calls with my daughters, the staff informed me that the FBI agent overseeing the calls remains unresponsive. This is the only explanation I have received. I implore you to authorize visits from my daughters, as their only opportunity to see me is during school breaks, given that they are studying in Mexico.”
El Chapo described the restriction on external communication as “unprecedented discrimination,” emphasizing, “They have opted to punish me by depriving me of the chance to speak with my daughters.”
