The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has underscored the imperative for solidarity among all northern appointees within President Bola Tinubu’s administration, insisting that failure to align with this collective effort warrants departure from their roles.
Matawalle’s stance was prompted by criticism from Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, the Special Adviser on Political Matters to the President, regarding Matawalle’s previous remarks. Matawalle had vocally condemned the Northern Elders Forum for their refusal to endorse Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 elections, dismissing the group as politically inconsequential and a burden to the northern region.
In response, Baba-Ahmed, a former spokesperson for the NEF, reproached Matawalle for his harsh critique, suggesting that a more effective defense of the administration could have been mounted by highlighting the contributions of northern ministers and other appointees towards enhancing security and alleviating poverty in the area.
Reacting to Baba-Ahmed’s viewpoint, Matawalle emphasized the obligation of all appointees, including Baba-Ahmed, to rally behind and shield the government from unwarranted attacks. He stressed the necessity for unity and steadfast support for Tinubu’s administration, urging all northern appointees to actively champion and safeguard its achievements.
Matawalle concluded by asserting that it is incumbent upon all appointees to vocally advocate for the success of the administration and to not remain passive amidst criticism and misrepresentation. He cautioned that those who diverge from this position should contemplate stepping down from their roles.
