Plateau Central’s Senator, Diket Plang, expressed appreciation towards President Bola Tinubu for endorsing the Student Loans (Assessment to Higher Education) Act (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill, 2024.Â
Plang, who chairs the Senate Committee on Labour, Employment, and Productivity, also praised the National Assembly for their diligence and patriotism in passing the bill. He emphasized that the enactment brings relief to Nigerian tertiary students in their pursuit of higher education.
Plang, in a statement he made in Jos, characterized the legislation as progressive, aimed at benefiting both Nigerians and the nation. He stressed that the law will ensure equitable access to higher education and training for talented Nigerian students regardless of financial constraints. Plang highlighted the transformative potential of the bill in promoting educational access and providing vital financial assistance, particularly to economically disadvantaged students.
Furthermore, he noted that the law will eliminate financial obstacles hindering access to tertiary education for students from low-income households. Plang underscored the significance of the bill in granting indigent students access to interest-free loans for their academic pursuits across Nigerian tertiary institutions.
He encouraged Nigerians, especially students and parents, to leverage these loans to prevent dropouts, thereby reducing potential criminal activities resulting from frustration. Plang emphasized the bill’s potential to enhance the quality of higher education and promote stability in tertiary institutions. He urged responsible management of the allocated funds to ensure effective implementation of the initiative.
