Laolu Akande, a former aide to ex-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, has strongly advocated for the prosecution of individuals involved in the controversial printing of money during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
Describing the printing of N22.7 trillion as a severe “economic calamity,” Akande asserted that those responsible must be held accountable in court. Speaking on Channels Television, where he previously served as the chief spokesman for Osinbajo,
Akande expressed deep concern that the matter might be swept under the rug and urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to take decisive action rather than merely expressing dissatisfaction.
Despite acknowledging the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) decision to grant Ways and Means to the Nigerian government as potentially necessary, Akande emphasized the importance of preventing similar incidents in the future and underscored the need for accountability through legal means to deter future occurrences.
Reflecting on the management of Nigeria’s monetary policies during Buhari’s tenure, Akande criticized the perceived lack of diligence, patriotism, and professionalism within the administration, expressing dismay at the extent of the challenges faced.
Meanwhile, Finance Minister Wale Edun attributed Nigeria’s current economic hardships to the excessive printing of money during Buhari’s administration.
Consequently, the Senate launched an investigation into the utilization of N30 trillion and $66 billion in Ways and Means funding, alleging mismanagement and its adverse impact on the nation’s food security and overall stability. Edun confirmed plans to conduct an audit of the funds’ utilization, emphasizing the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
