In a significant development, the Federal Government has revealed plans to initiate train services along the Port Harcourt to Aba route by the conclusion of March.

This announcement, reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), marks a pivotal step in the broader Port Harcourt-Maiduguri railroad project spearheaded by President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

Mr. Fidet Okhiria, the Managing Director of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), shared this update following a delegation’s visit to oversee a test-run on the revamped Eastern Narrow Gauge Rail line in Port Harcourt.

Okhiria highlighted ongoing efforts by workers to add final touches to the tracks, ensuring readiness for full-scale train operations within the month.

Expressing satisfaction with the progress, Okhiria underscored the directive from the Minister of Transportation, Mu’azu Sambo, to integrate the Port Harcourt route into the rail network, alongside plans to link Onne Port.

Confident in the contractor’s capacity, Okhiria projected the completion of essential railroad adjustments within two weeks, paving the way for the targeted resumption of train services within three weeks.

He also outlined intentions to kickstart passenger train operations by March and fully restore transportation between Port Harcourt and Aba by the month’s end.

In a bid for project expansion, Okhiria revealed ongoing collaboration with stakeholders to design a rail track connecting the Port Harcourt-Aba line to the Onne sea port, streamlining logistics and enhancing connectivity.

On the issue of transport fares, Okhiria acknowledged potential adjustments due to escalating diesel costs. However, he assured a commitment to offsetting operational expenses, with passengers expected to contribute towards sustaining operations.

Emphasizing safety, Okhiria reiterated efforts to fortify security measures and urged local communities to safeguard railway infrastructure. He also cautioned against encroachments on rail lines, underscoring adherence to fixed schedules for uninterrupted train services.
