The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has proposed solutions to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration aimed at mitigating Nigeria’s severe economic challenges.

TUC emphasized the urgent need for the government to import food from abroad to address the ongoing hunger crisis in Nigeria.

Festus Osifo, President of TUC, conveyed these suggestions during a press conference held on Monday in Abuja, where he addressed the nation’s economic hardships.

Expressing deep concern, Osifo noted that Nigerians are currently enduring unprecedented levels of hardship, surpassing even the challenges witnessed during military regimes. He attributed these difficulties to the government’s insufficient support for locally produced goods and services and the absence of competent leadership.

Osifo stressed the need for immediate action, advocating for the government to procure sufficient quantities of food from international sources and distribute them to vulnerable citizens. He argued that importing food from abroad would help alleviate the hyperinflation of food prices in the country. Osifo urged the Federal Government to permit the importation of food items for consumption within the next two weeks.

Furthermore, Osifo advised President Tinubu to promptly enhance the economic management team of his administration. He also urged the president to prioritize competence over political or tribal affiliations when appointing individuals to key positions, suggesting recruiting skilled Nigerians from around the globe to devise indigenous solutions to the prevailing economic challenges.

The call for action comes amidst the Nigeria Labour Congress’s (NLC) insistence on nationwide protests scheduled for February 27th and 28th to protest against economic hardship. Protests have already taken place in Niger, Kogi, Lagos, and Oyo states, indicating widespread concern over the country’s economic predicament.
