Renowned human rights activist, Femi Falana (SAN), has urged the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation to publicly release the monthly allocations to states and local governments.
Falana’s call to action was articulated during an interview on Channels Television aired on Tuesday.
In his discourse, Falana stressed the paramount importance of governmental transparency, particularly in demonstrating how funds derived from the elimination of oil subsidies are utilized. He emphasized that such transparency is crucial for fostering trust among Nigerians regarding government operations. Moreover, Falana urged the media to consistently press for detailed information regarding the monthly allocations to all tiers of government.
Citing Section 22 of the constitution, which mandates the media to advocate for transparency and accountability in governance, Falana underscored the media’s pivotal role in seeking regular financial disclosures from each level of government.
Furthermore, Falana emphasized the necessity of comparing pre-subsidy removal revenues with post-removal incomes accruing to the federal government. He specifically pointed out the period during which the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) did not remit any funds to the federal account for nearly a year.
Falana called for clarity on the government’s earnings from the subsidy removal, including comprehensive breakdowns of monthly revenues and the disbursement of the promised N35,000 wage award to workers.
