The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) chapter in Jigawa State has declined the N10,000 wage offer proposed by the state government in response to the removal of fuel subsidies.Â
This refusal was communicated in a press release issued following a meeting of organized labor in Dutse on Tuesday. The release, signed by the respective state chairpersons and secretaries of NLC and TUC, characterized the government’s announcement of the salary increase as premature, citing a lack of finalized agreements.
The statement highlighted the ongoing negotiations between the NLC Salary Negotiation Committee and the state government committee, stressing that although various proposals were submitted, the government had yet to respond.
It expressed surprise at the state Commissioner of Information, Youth, and Culture’s announcement of the N10,000 wage increase for three months, emphasizing that no Memorandum of Understanding had been signed with the government and that negotiations were still ongoing.
In response to inquiries, the state’s Head of Civil Service, Muhammad K. Dagacire, asserted that the NLC negotiation committee was fully informed of the state government’s decisions regarding workers’ palliatives.
He outlined the agreed-upon measures, including a three-month wage increase, food aid, and the allocation of at least one hectare of farmland with inputs to every civil servant. Dagacire reaffirmed the government’s commitment to implementing these measures, expressing surprise at the reported rejection of the N10,000 offer by the NLC.
