The Senate has announced that the security chiefs summoned last week to address the escalating insecurity will face questioning on February 7 and 8 to devise strategies to tackle criminal activities in the nation.
Senator Adetokunbo Abiru, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions, revealed this development on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, he mentioned that the scheduled meeting with the CBN Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, has been rescheduled to Friday due to the impending session with the security chiefs.
Last Tuesday, the Senate summoned the security chiefs to provide explanations on the deteriorating security situation during a plenary session. Similarly, the Committee on Banking summoned the CBN governor to discuss the nation’s economy and the depreciation of the naira on Tuesday.
However, the committee members convened at Room 211 for the planned interface with the CBN governor from 3 pm to 4:30 pm but decided to postpone it to Friday.
Senator Abiru explained the postponement, stating, “After waiting for close to two hours for the CBN governor for the planned interface, we have resolved to postpone it to Friday this week at 9 am. The decision was influenced by the ongoing engagement between the CBN governor and our colleagues in the House of Representatives, with no clear end time.”
“We initially considered rescheduling for Wednesday or Thursday, but the Senate has allocated those days for critical discussions with the Service Chiefs. Therefore, we settled on Friday for the interface with the CBN Governor at 9 am. Formal communication regarding this change will be sent to the CBN Governor and other relevant government officials overseeing the economy.”
