Governor Yemi Cardoso of the Central Bank of Nigeria and Minister Wale Edun of Finance are currently participating in the House of Representatives’ ongoing sectoral debate on the economy.

They are joined by Zacch Adedeji, the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), and Minister Abubakar Bagudu of Budget and National Planning.

This discussion is part of the House’s series of sectoral debates, following a similar retreat on the Defence sector held last November.

During his speech, FIRS Chairman Adedeji assured lawmakers that the agency has no plans to introduce new taxes or increase existing ones. He clarified that the FIRS acts solely as a revenue collector and expressed confidence in surpassing the N19.2 trillion target set in the 2024 budget. Adedeji highlighted challenges in petroleum tax collection due to oil theft and production cuts.

At the time of reporting, Governor Cardoso was addressing concerns regarding foreign exchange volatility and market liquidity shortages.
