In the aftermath of the explosion that happened in ibadan on January 16, 2024, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has signed Executive Order 001 of 2024, focused on the safe handling of hazardous substances within the state.Â
The signing ceremony took place on Wednesday. During the signing event, Governor Makinde emphasized the necessity of implementing measures to ensure the safe storage and management of dangerous materials throughout Oyo State.
He highlighted that this executive order now establishes a legal framework to regulate the handling of such substances within the state’s borders.
Governor Makinde reiterated the government’s dedication to taking proactive steps to prevent future incidents like the explosion on January 16th. He noted that comprehensive structural integrity assessments of buildings in the vicinity of the explosion site have already been conducted.
The governor outlined proactive measures being undertaken by the government, including convening an extensive meeting to strategize on further actions. He stressed the importance of responsible storage practices, particularly concerning hazardous substances, to mitigate potential risks to public safety.
Under the provisions of the executive order, individuals or entities storing hazardous substances within residential areas are required to promptly notify the state government.
This notification obligation applies regardless of whether the storage is authorized under a license. The Special Adviser to the governor must be notified to ensure compliance with safety protocols and minimize risks to the community.
Governor Makinde underscored that these regulations will remain in effect until further notice, affirming the government’s commitment to prioritizing the safety and well-being of all residents of Oyo State.
