Manchester United have advanced to the fourth round of the FA Cup following a 4-2 victory over League Two outfit Newport County.
United started strongly and appeared to secure the win with goals from Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo, giving them a 2-0 advantage within the opening 13 minutes.
Despite United’s dominance and Alejandro Garnacho hitting the woodwork, Newport County, situated 73 places below them in the league hierarchy, staged an impressive comeback cheered on by passionate Welsh fans at Rodney Parade.
Bryn Morris’ long-range strike, deflected off Lisandro Martinez’s head, found the net past United’s debutant goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, sparking excitement among the home crowd.
Newport leveled the score early in the second half when Will Evans capitalized on Adam Lewis’ cross, beating Raphael Varane to ignite celebrations among ‘The Amber Army’ supporters.
Although stunned, United managed to regain their composure and took the lead again in the 68th minute, with Antony reacting quickly to score after Luke Shaw’s shot rebounded off the post.
Rasmus Hojlund secured the victory for Erik ten Hag’s side, netting from close range after Omari Forson’s shot was blocked by Newport goalkeeper Nick Townsend.
This time, Newport County couldn’t respond, allowing Manchester United to secure a place in the fifth round, where they will face either Bristol City or Nottingham Forest.
